What’s your colour?

Posted by: Sliderobes Team Posted Date: 08/18/2010

Customers often comment on the huge range of Sliderobes colours and finishes we offer. That’s because we recognise that colour is a powerful tool in decorating a bedroom. It expresses your personal taste and preferences. But we also believe that colour plays more than just a decorative role - it has also been shown to affect our physical, psychological and emotional wee-being. Every colour has its own attributes – yellow increases efficiency; blue soothes the nerves and induces sleep, while red is a harmonious colour that can be welcoming and warm.

So, when choosing a specific colour or combination of hues for your bedroom, make sure you take their physical and psychological effects into consideration. The colours you choose may even alleviate emotional, mental and physiological conditions, so it pays to choose colours for how they affect you. Here’s how:

  1. Think about who will be occupying the room. Someone who has trouble getting up in the morning would benefit from a bright, sunny hue; whereas an overactive child would be best served by colours that instil calm.
  2. Consider the size and shape of the bedroom. Stronger colours will make a room seem smaller, and lighter ceilings will make walls seem tall.
  3. Draw inspiration fro your colour scheme from favourite textiles or pieces of furniture. For example, use soothing pale blues to complement a light wood chest of drawers.
  4. Choose colours with which you are comfortable and that make you feel good. It often makes sense to stick with colours you already know, rather than slavishly following trends that are not to your taste.

Give your head peace

Naff and bulky, or comfort and joy? When it comes to upholstered headboards, we’re firmly in the latter camp. In fact, we think with a little care and attention, an upholstered headboard can transform your mundane bedroom into a sumptuous boudoir.

If you’re feeling especially energetic you can always make your own – try these links for inspiration and tips. But we reckon that if “..life’s too short to stuff a mushroom..” (thank you, Shirley Conran) then it’s definitely too precious to spend time upholstering a headboard. So buy your own.

Be bold and think outside the (square) box…..go for a curved or scalloped shaped headboard. Or choose an oversized piece to anchor the room. If you’ve already installed you fitted Sliderobes wardrobe, this ‘big and bold’ approach will work particularly well by lending a sense of balance to your room. And why not unleash your artistic beast when it comes to colour. Choose a bold or graphic fabric for a splash of colour and added zest!

OK, now on to more mundane matters. As with all pieces of upholstery, a fabric–covered headboard will collect some dust and dirt. The answer is to gently run your hand-held vacuum cleaner over the fabric once a month to keep your upholstered headboard looking bright and new for years to come. For inspiration, check out these ideas or why not send us before and after photos of your transformed bedroom!

The Power of Sleep

Posted by: Sliderobes Team Posted Date: 08/16/2010

People often complain about how tired they are and with little wonder. Studies show that the amount of time we sleep at night has declined about 20% over the last century, and that many adults sleep for six hours or less a night.

While this may seem tiresome, but harmless, the truth is that sleep deprivation can have dire consequences. It can impede our ability to work, cause traffic accidents, and increase our irritability and stress. In fact, people who sleep six hours or less are twice as likely to suffer illness and premature death as those who sleep between six and ten hours a night!

So, here are Sliderobes’ three vital tips to deep, meaningful sleep:

  1. Make up lost sleep. On average we need seven and a half hours rest a night and it’s important to make up lost sleep. This can be done by going to bed earlier or taking a short nap during the day. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is one of the best ways you can feel refreshed every day.
  2. Sleep cycles. Our sleep alternates between very deep slow-wave sleep, and lighter REM sleep (rapid eye movement), which is lighter and lasts longer. Slow-wave sleep is critical in keeping our bodies healthy and refreshed. Going to bed earlier increases the chances of a healthy balance of slow-wave and REM sleep.
  3. Bedroom design. To ensure a good night’s rest, design your bedroom around sleep. Your fully fitted Sliderobes wardrobe will play a role here, helping to keep your bedroom clutter-free and tidy. Avoid watching television, eating or talking on the phone, all of which can cause you to stay awake.
