Defining Interior Design for 2012

A definition assigns meaning and purpose. It can even describe the character of a term.

Definitions in interior design do the same, yet styles constantly change and new fads come along. With all of the different definitions, it’s hard to keep track of current trends.

The world may be online and at our fingertips, but this information highway can make definitions blur. Here is a definitive guide to some of the top interior trends for 2012, but keep in mind that trends are created by consumers. Let the definitions inspire you, but don’t be afraid to mix and mingle things until you find a style of your own.

Heritage is hot in 2012. British Heritage will be highlighted this month at Interiors UK, the largest interiors trades show in the UK. Heritage isn’t just about accessorising with family heirlooms, it is a mix of subtle shades or floral prints that compliment an antiquated look. If you enjoy rummaging through car boot sales, markets and second-hand shops, you will find endless treasures to accentuate this style.

Whether its furniture or fashion, the vintage look is still trending. This eclectic mix of nostalgia and culture spans the style spectrum; anything goes from pop art to reclaimed furniture. Many vintage pieces are salvaged, which helps the environment by reducing landfill fodder.

Carbon foot printing is the catchphrase for 2012. The result is a shift away from cheap and cheerful and a stronger emphasis on interiors that reflect quality and sustainability. More consumers than ever want to know where products come from, how they are made and how it impacts the environment. This focus on quality and not quantity has sparked a trend for bespoke furniture and created a demand for refurbished furniture.

With a little imagination, almost anything can be revamped into contemporary or quirky furnishing. Old chairs can become frames, old skis can become bookshelves, barn doors can become tables and old crates can become trendy kitchen storage.  Handmade quilts make lovely wall art and a refinished chest of drawers solve storage issues in the bathroom.

Bespoke furniture is just as creative and eco-friendly. Custom-made furniture may cost a bit more initially, but it saves money in the long run. That’s why this trend ticks all the boxes for 2012. Bespoke pieces are hand-crafted, are often made from local materials and are made to the customer’s specifications. Customers get to choose the design, size and function.

Many bespoke pieces are multi-functional, which strikes another big trend for 2012. Function is high on the agenda. It’s not enough to look nice; furniture also needs to serve dual or multiple purposes. Whether your living area is limited or you just want to minimise clutter, this is the new economy of space.

A trend towards minimalist and contemporary interiors also echoes the current climate. Sometimes less really is more. The sleek lines and warm tones of these styles have softened this year and the emphasis is on larger pieces and solid colours. This new look will add a chilled-out charm to any room.

Hopefully these trends will give you inspiration to decorate your home, but don’t give in to a trend unless it suits your style. Remember, the most important thing is to create a home that makes you happy.
