Are you creative? To answer that you probably think about your job and what you are employed to do in your everyday existence. Often people think that creativity is confined to those who are designers, artists, film makers, musicians, in advertising and the like. But one of the world's most successful companies, Apple, had a driving force behind their business strategy..."Everybody has a creative soul".
An essential part of bring human is the ability to invent, to make things up, to take a blank sheet of paper and add to it. We all do it and from an early age but sometimes we forget, and start to get embarrassed about our creativity. We look to others for their opinion, we begin to fear criticism and so we start to follow more and more closely what everyone else does.
One of the places that you should feel free to create and design is your own home. It is your blank canvas, a space that you can turn into your very own. Imagine if you walked into another house and it was decorated exactly the same as yours. You would think you were entering the twilight zone, and expect that spooky music. But being totally creative takes nerve. At Sliderobes we love working with customers and we find that they are all creative in their own way. So if you are thinking about your own creative soul, here are a few tips to help you in your creative journey.
There are trends. Colours that are fashionable, fabrics that are popular, light fittings that are new. But there are no rules. Start to collect ideas from magazines by cutting out photographs of the things you like. But use them to inspire your own ideas. If you are out and about, take photographs with your camera phone. It might be a colour of paint, a picture, a flower, a dress or blouse with a pattern.
But remember trends come and go, and your room will probably not be changed for a few years, so your own opinion and ideas are more important than the trends.
The next tip is to create a mood board. Print out all your pictures and stick them down on a big sheet of paper. Put photographs of the people that will be using the room on there as well. Think of a new name for your room, just to spark your thinking. So your bedroom could become...”The Snuggle Space” or your home office “the get up and go room”. Put the title on the mood board. It will encourage you to think a little bit outside the box.
The biggest challenge in being creative is to trust your instincts and not to try to second guess what others will think. It doesn’t matter what your friends and neighbours say, they are not going to live there, and you can take the high ground...I am creative.
