The changing face of home living space

It takes a while for changes to happen in architecture. Many people move into houses that were built over 50 years ago to a formula that was the style of the time. A living room, a sitting room, the good room for Sundays with the family, a dining room and a kitchen, with the only variation being the room size depending on the house size.
But changes in lifestyle and attitudes have resulted in changes in how we live and how use our space. The flat screen TV means that we no longer need a designated viewing room. Televisions don’t dominate as they used to, being flat against the wall. Headphones see parents and children sharing a room while using different media sources. Formal eating is less common, with microwave cooking and large fridges replacing larders. Mum and Dad work, kids go out and about and everyone can eat to their own taste.
A recent survey by Lloyds TSB Home Insurance has revealed that the modern house has changed dramatically. Walls have tumbled down as larger communal space is better for modern family living, and the main casualty is the dining room as 32% of home owners have swung the sledgehammer. Why waste the space on a room that is rarely used?
The kitchen as a separate space is also under threat, as 12% no longer have a unique cooking space preferring open plan living. The healthy living among us, have prompted the increase in home gyms, with one in fifty homes now allocating space to their exercise regime. Utility rooms are also much more common as we hide the washing machines away, and games rooms for X-Box and Playstation are now in six per cent of homes.
At Sliderobes we have seen how this has changed the way that people now want to use their space. Our designers are being asked to be even more imaginative as rooms change their use, the items to be stored differ and the home owner wanting an interior that best suits their own personal requirements.
So if you want to make sure that your household space is not cluttered, that it is designed to your own specification and requirements and that the workmanship is top quality, why not talk to one of our designers before you call in the wrecking team?
